古今東西、多くの作曲家は、キリスト教の「死者のためのミサ（いわゆる葬式）」に使われるラテン語典礼文を使って合唱曲を書いてきました。これらの楽曲は、典礼文の冒頭、入祭唱の最初の一語である「Requiem（安息・休むこと）」を使って、一般的には「レクイエム」というタイトルで呼ばれています。元々は典礼で使用されることを前提に書かれてきたレクイエムも、古典派やロマン派など時代を下るにつれて、「典礼で使用される楽曲」としての性格は薄れ、作曲家が「死（とその後）」を見つめたときの表現の結果としての音楽、という面が強くなっていき、それは各作曲家の歌詞の選択、楽曲構成、曲調に大きく影響していきました。
本楽曲「Requiem Pacis」は、２００５年、私が２３歳の時に、学士課程卒業リサイタルの為の作品の一つとして作曲したものです。全体が、優しい、明るい、または力強い歌詞と曲調で構成され、「幸せで満たされた人生を送った人にふさわしい楽曲とはどのようなものか？」という問いに対する私の答えや「このような楽曲が似合う人生をおくりたい、そして、そのために精一杯生きよう」という願いや思いを、私なりにこめた作品です。 私たちの前を歩んだ人のこと、そして私たち自身とこれから歩む道を、明るい光で照らす作品になっていれば幸いです。
about the Commission and the Premiere
The work was premiered by the University Chorus of California State University, Northridge, conducted by Dr. Elmer Heerema on May 4, 2005. The organ version was commissioned by the Osaka University Mixed Chorus, and premiered by the Chorus on December 23, 2009, conducted by Masahiko Nezu. The piano part was updated in 2011 at the request of Pana Musica, a Japanese publisher, for the publication of the work in Japan, so that it could be performed with piano accompaniment only.
委嘱・初演に関して
本楽曲は、University Chorus of California State University, Northridgeにより2005年5月4日に初演が行なわれました。オルガン版は大阪大学混声合唱団による委嘱により制作され、2009年12月23日に初演が行なわれました。また、パナムジカ社による日本での製本版の出版にあわせ、ピアノ伴奏のみでも演奏可能になりました。
