The Unceasing Breath of My Heart

1. To the Spring Breeze
To the spring breeze,
a dandelion is singing quietly.
In the blue sky,
white notes are dancing gently.
To the spring breeze,
the dandelion is singing its own way.
In the blue sky,
white notes are sparkling gently.
If I were to sing,
what song would I sing?
If I were to give wings to my words—
If I were to gift my heart to someone—
To the spring breeze,
the dandelion is singing quietly.
In the flow of white notes,
I’ve caught a faint scent of summer.
2. The Singing of My Heart
No one can stop
my heart from singing.
I’ve been singing all my life
with a voice that surely captivates all.
I’ve been singing always
with a smile that makes all look back.
Even if someone tries to cover my mouth,
even if the times try to cover my mouth,
my breath—
the breath of my heart—
has never once stopped.
No one can stop
my heart from singing.
No one can stop
the energy that runs through my heart.
I’ve been singing all my life,
because there are feelings I want to express in words.
I’ve always wanted to sing,
because the music that I want to hold my feelings
encourages my heart.
Even if someone tries to cover my heart,

Prelude to Spring
5. On the Spring Breeze
A single word has been delivered to me on the spring breeze.
I don’t know who sent it.
I don’t even know whence it came.
A word on the spring breeze has landed in my heart.
Before I know it, it has taken root, grown tall,
and bloomed in the color of my heart.
It bloomed as my word.
Then, clad in a gentle feeling,
the word has set off from my lips
as the breath of my heart.
On the spring breeze, words, feelings, and I—
On the spring breeze, they all have flown to you.
A single word has been delivered to you on the spring breeze.
Before I know it, you have breathed the word
into a new music that spreads the shining wings of sound.
It must have bloomed for all of us.
Then, clad with vivid singing voices,
a song has flown from our lips
as the breath of our hearts.
It is a love letter on the spring breeze,
to the music that has never-ended.

初演によせて （初演時のプログラムノートより）
１． 春風にむかって
春風に舞うたんぽぽの綿毛が音符に見えたとき、その「歌声」に私たちは何を感じるのでしょうか？ヘ長調の柔らかな３拍子のなかで、春の様々な色彩と次の季節への予感が流れていきます。
２． 私の心が歌うのを
長い歴史や各人の人生の中で歌や音楽が消えることはありました。しかし、私たちの心はいつの時代も歌ってしまうもの、自由を求めてしまうものなのです。合唱団全員による力強いオープニングフレーズで始まるエネルギー溢れる音楽が４拍子でヘ長調から変イ長調へと展開していきます。
３． 秋風と、木枯らしと
秋から冬への季節の変化は、時に美しく映ります。変化が来ることを予測できなかった童話のなかのキリギリスにとっては季節の移り変わりは寂しいものかもしれません。６／８拍子のノスタルジックな響きと変化する調性の流れのなかに何を想うのでしょうか？
４． 楽譜を抱いて
闇に、先が見えない不安に、私たちは眠れぬ夜を過ごすことがあります。そんな時、何を心の支えにするのでしょうか？ピアノの支えがないニ短調の無伴奏の響きは、時に寂しさを呼び起こすのかもしれません。
５． 春風にのって
誰かの言葉に、歌に心打たれる時があります。受け取った感動は、私たちの心の中で育ち、いつか誰かの心を動かす表現となって旅立っていくのでしょう。季節が巡るように、私たちの心の息吹である歌や音楽もまた、終わらない旅をするものなのかもしれません。春風は第一楽章と同じヘ長調の響きとなって、今度は４拍子の音楽として流れていきます。

This work was commissioned by Mixed Chorus: Egolado of the Kwansei Gakuin University (Hyogo, Japan), and the premiere was given by the group on Dec. 21, 2024.
