1. An April Day
When the warm sun, that brings
seed-time and harvest, has returned again,
it’s sweet to visit the still wood, where springs
the first flower of the plain.
The softly-warbled song
comes from the pleasant woods, and colored wings
glance quick in the bright sun that moves along
the forest openings.
When the bright sunset fills
the silver woods with light, the green slope throws
its shadows in the hollows of the hills,
and wide the upland glows.
And when the eve is born,
in the blue lake, the sky—over-reaching far—
is hollowed out, and the moon dips her horn,
and twinkles many a star.
Sweet April! Many a thought
is wedded unto thee, as hearts are wed;
nor shall they fail, till—to its autumn brought—
life's golden fruit is shed.
2. The Day is Done
The day is done, and the darkness
falls from the wings of Night,
as a feather is wafted downward
from an eagle in his flight.
Come, read to me some poem,
some simple and heartfelt melody,
and lend to the rhyme of the poet
the beauty of your voice.
And the night shall be filled with music.
3. The Rainy Day
The day is cold, and dark, and dreary:
It rains, and the wind is never weary.
The vine still clings to the moldering wall,
but at every gust, the dead leaves fall.
My life is cold, and dark, and dreary:
It rains, and the wind is never weary.
My thoughts still cling to the moldering Past,
but the hopes of youth fall thick in the blast.
Be still, sad heart! And cease repining.
Behind the clouds is the sun, still shining.
Your fate is the common fate of all:
into each life some rain must fall;
some days must be dark and dreary.
4. A Psalm of Life
Tell me not, in mournful numbers,
life is but an empty dream.
We can make our lives sublime,
and, departing, leave behind us
footprints on the sands of time.
5. The Arrow and the Song
I shot an arrow into the air.
It fell to earth, I knew not where.
For—so swiftly it flew—the sight
could not follow it in its flight.
I breathed a song into the air.
It fell to earth, I knew not where.
For who has sight so keen and strong
that it can follow the flight of song?
Long, long afterward, in an oak,
I found the arrow, still unbroken.
And the song—from beginning to end—
I found again in the heart of a friend.
6. My Lost Youth
I can see the breezy dome of groves—
the shadows of Deering's Woods.
And the friendships old and the early loves
come back with a Sabbath sound, as of doves
in quiet neighborhoods.
And the verse of that sweet old song—
it flutters and murmurs still.
"A boy's will is the wind's will,
and the thoughts of youth are long, long thoughts."
And Deering's Woods are fresh and fair;
and—with joy that is almost pain—
my heart goes back to wander there.
And among the dreams of the days that were,
I find my lost youth again.
And the strange and beautiful song—
the groves are repeating it still—
"A boy's will is the wind's will,
and the thoughts of youth are long, long thoughts."

種まきと収穫の季節を運んで来るとき
野に最初の花が咲く
あの静かな森に行きたくなる
柔らかくさえずる歌が
心地よい森から響き
鮮やかな翼はきらめく
木漏れ日を動くまばゆい太陽に
煌く夕日が
銀色の森を光で包むとき 碧の丘は
谷に影を落とす
そして 高原は輝きを広げる
夕暮れが生まれるとき
蒼い湖の中で 遠くに伸びる空は薄まり
月はその角を浸し
そして 無数の星が瞬く
さわやかな四月よ！ 無数の想いは
心と心がそうするように あなたと結ばれる
想いは続く 秋が訪れるまで
そう 命という金色の果実が落るまで

夜の翼から舞い落ちる

私達が歩いた軌跡を残す事だってできる

あまりに速く飛んだので
目で追える者などいない

ディアリング の森の木陰だ
古き友情と初恋が
安息日の音と共にもどってくる
静かな街に舞い戻る鳩のように
そして 優しく懐かしい歌の詩は
まだ ひらめき ささやく
「少年の意志は 風の意思
青春の想いは いつまでも」
ディアリングの森はすがすがしく美しい
そして 痛いくらいの喜びと共に
私の心は 故郷をさまよう
そして 昔の日々の夢から
私は なくした青春を見つけだした

about the Commission and the Premiere
This work was commissioned by the Chor Alpha (Hyogo, Japan) for its tenth year anniversary recital (Conducted by Nobutaka Tsuji, Piano by Mariko Hosomi).
委嘱・初演に関して
本楽曲は、コール・アルファによる委嘱作品であり、初演は同団により、２０１３年１０月２６日「コール・アルファ１０周年記念リサイタル」（宝塚ベガ・ホール）にて行われました。（指揮・辻伸高、ピアノ・細見真理子）
