1. Awakening
In the mist of dawn, after a rain,
a seed awakes.
Quietly... No one notices...
In the tranquility of dawn,
the seed begins to breathe.

Birds begin to sing as the sun rises.
Sunlight begins to dance with the song.
“Spring has come!”
“No winter stays eternally!”
In the joy of the spring,
the seed grows.

2. White Noises
In the mild summer breeze,
countless sensings of fresh leaves echo—
Burning youth,
Yearning love,
Secret anxiety,
Hopes of tomorrow.
They are lights that new green can radiate.
They are “white noises”
composed of countless tangled sensations.
A stone nearby gazes and wonders,
“Ah! How wonderful is the limitless potentiality
that is spread from a trunk called
‘new generation.’”
Then quietly the stone listens to dreams unsaid
so that it may sense certain sensations
in uncertain noises.
Summer breezes bear countless sensations
beyond the horizon,

Program Note (JPN Only) / プログラムノート
「Arbor Mundi（世界樹）」によせて (初演時のプログラムノートより)
２０１０年１２月４日、当時、静岡県浜松市にいた私のもとへ、明治大学グリークラブＯＢ会合唱団「駿河台倶楽部」の渡辺利雅さんから新曲の委嘱依頼の一通の電子メールが届きました。ちょうど１２月１３日に、別件で都内に出かける予定があったので、顔合わせ・打ち合わせもかねて、駿河台倶楽部のみなさんとお会いする時間を作っていただき、合唱団のこと、「塩野静一男声合唱振興基金」のこと、そして新曲に関しての皆さんの希望を聞かせていただきました。楽曲に関する希望を短くまとめると以下のようになります。①幅広い団体に、過度な負担なく、広く歌い継がれる曲。②若者も共感でき、未来に希望がもて、男声合唱っていいなと思える曲。③世界中の男声合唱団にも広がる曲。
ラテン語歌詞を新しく創作する旨をその場で伝え、盛り上がりながら東京を後にし、構想を考え始めた２０１１年３月１１日、東日本大震災が起こりました。混乱の中で関東に引越し、その後４月１６日に、初めて駿河台倶楽部の練習を見学した後の飲み会の場で、歌詞のテーマとして決めかねていた点を、合唱団の皆さんに質問しました。
「『不死鳥』と『世界樹』、どっちがいいですか？」
「『世界樹』！」
かくして、詩のテーマは『世界樹』にきまり、６月に歌詞スケッチの完成、その後ラテン語翻訳を担当していただいたロバート・ジャズラブスキー先生と何度もやり取りをしながら、２０１１年８月末に全曲が完成しました。
本楽曲「Arbor Mundi（世界樹）」は、新作ラテン語詩に基づく、６楽章構成のピアノ伴奏付き男声合唱組曲です。ラテン語歌詞には、現状、英訳と日本語訳が用意されてあります。
第一楽章「Expergisci （目覚め）」では、新たに芽吹いた幼樹のように、主題となる音形がゆっくり育っていきます。第二楽章「Strepitus Candidi（白いざわめき）」では、風になびく若木の新緑が作る葉音や想い、そしてその様子を優しく見守る自然の情景が、流れるピアノにのせて歌われます。第三楽章「Hasta Fulminea （光の槍）」では、若木を貫いた稲妻を見つめ、繰り返すピアノの最低音の上で、合唱が厳しく問いかけます。
第四楽章「Carmen Imbris （雨の歌）」では、雨の声と鎮魂の想いが、優しく降りそそぐピアノと共に歌われていきます。第五楽章「Sensus （想い）」では、死して残る想いを、無伴奏の男声合唱が柔らかく歌い上げていきます。そして、最終楽章である第六楽章「Carmen Arboris Mundi （世界樹の歌）」では、世界樹として蘇っていく新しい命と、そこに集まり守る多くの想いを、男声合唱が、全ての楽章を駆け抜けながら力強く歌い上げます。明治大学グリークラブＯＢ会合唱団が、皆さんに、そして未来に向けて歌う「世界樹の物語」を、是非お楽しみください。
about the Commission and the Premiere
The original male chorus version of the work was commissioned by the "Male Chorus Promotion Fund in Memory of Seiichi Shiono" of the Meiji University Glee Club Old Boys (Alumni) Association.
The premiere of the male chorus version was given by the Meiji University Glee Club Old Boys (Alumni) Association Chorus - Surugadai Club on July 1, 2012 in Tokyo, Japan, conducted by the composer.
The mixed chorus version was commissioned by the Taipei Ladies’ Singers. It was premiered by the Taipei Philharmonic Youth Choir; a joint chorus of the Taipei Ladies’ Singers and Harmonia Male Choir on Sep. 23, 2013 at the National Concert Hall (Taipei, Taiwan), conducted by the composer.
委嘱・初演に関して
本楽曲は男声合唱組曲として、明治大学グリークラブOB会・塩野静一記念男声合唱振興基金により委嘱され、
男声版の初演は、明治大学グリークラブOB会・駿河台倶楽部によって2012年7月1日に行われました。
混声版は、Taipei Ladies's Singers（中山女高校友合唱團）により委嘱され、初演はTaipei Ladies's SingersとHarmonia Male Choir (龤之聲男聲合唱團)による合同合唱團 Taipei Philharmonic Youth Choir (台北愛樂青年合唱團)により、2013年9月23日に台湾・台北市・國家音樂廟 (National Concert Hall)にて行なわれました。
Meiji University Glee Club Old Boys (Alumni) Association —
Male Chorus Promotion Fund in Memory of Seiichi Shiono
Seiichi Shiono was the student conductor of the Meiji University Glee Club during 1973 and 1974. Unfortunately, he died prematurely in 1996, at the young age of forty-five. On the basis of his will and its initial donation, the Meiji University Glee Club Old Boys (Alumni) Association established the Male Chorus Promotion Fund in 1997 as a memorial to Shiono's zealous enthusiasm for the male chorus. Its goal was to promote and encourage progress in the male chorus activities that he championed and inspired. The Fund is supported and aided by the old boys (alumni) of the Meiji University Glee Club and by many other individuals who value the male chorus. To further its goal of promoting male chorus activities, the Fund has commissioned and premiered new choral works for male chorus, and promoted the works to major male choral groups in Japan and beyond.
明治大学グリークラブOB会
塩野静一記念男声合唱振興基金
「塩野静一記念男声合唱振興基金」は、1996年10月に45歳の若さで亡くなった塩野静一氏（明治大学グリークラブ1973年度学生指揮者・千葉県山武市、旧成東町出身）の遺志により、ご遺族からなされたご寄付を基に、1997年4月、明治大学グリークラブOB会が設置したものです。塩野氏は、亡くなる半年前、死を覚悟する中で「生命もあとわずかである。今までためた金があるので、自分が死んだらこの金を使って男声合唱曲の作成 など、男声合唱のために役立つことをしていってもらいたい」と大学時代をグリークラブで共に過ごした同期のものに夢を託しました。
「塩野静一記念男声合唱振興基金」は、この塩野氏の遺志を受け継ぐもので、男声合唱曲の作成・提供などの男声合唱の振興を図るための事業を行うことを目的とするものです。明治大学グリークラブＯＢ会では限られた額の基金ではありますが、この「塩野静一記念男声合唱振興基金」により、男声合唱を愛する 多くの人々と手を結び、より多く、より永く、男声合唱の振興に役立つ事業を行っていきたいと考えています。
